Welcome back to the
Lisa Loves: Health + Lifestyle
The weather is getting pretty chilly in Melbourne right now and I am upping the anti on all the immune boosting things for our family.
We have an orange tree in our backgarden and the beautiful fruit is starting to ripen - hello Vitamin C hit from home!
We also start eating lots of soups, which also means stock is needed. Often on a Sunday I will roast a chicken to use in the kids lunches throughout the week and I always save the carcass and put on a stock. Here’s my super simple recipe.
Ingredients:
Leftover chicken carcass
4 litres of water
2 leeks or 2 onions, chopped in chunks
2 carrots, chopped in chunks
2-4 cloves of garlic - halved
2 tbls apple cider vinegar
Instructions:
Place all ingredients in a large saucepan and bring to the boil
If any foam rises to the top, remove it with a spoon
Then pop a lid on the saucepan, reduce the heat and let it simmer for 2-3 hours. (You can also do this in a slow cooker and cook on high for 3-4 hours)
Strain chicken carcass and vegetables and store your chicken stock in the fridge for a week - or freeze it. I like to freeze some in ice cube trays so I can cook an egg in the stock - delish!

If you saw my crockery drawer a month ago it might have given you organised types the heebee jeebees! Plates and bowls of all sorts of different patterns and sizes. ‘Eclectic’ is how I described it! Years of things getting chipped or broken (and therefore thrown away) and using bamboo or plastic plates with young kids was fine… until I decided to actually use the money mum and dad had given me at Christmas to buy a new set of crockery.
I was in a local kitchen shop that was closing down when I found something I liked. I bought two boxes and now my drawer looks completely transformed! Everything old went to the op-shop and I couldn’t have imagined the level of joy an organised crockery drawer gives me!
This is what I got and I LOVE it!

When it comes to letting go:
The Language of Letting Go - Daily Meditations on Codependency by Melodie Beatie has been a lifeline for me! Open at any page and read a beautiful reflection. A friend sent it to me years ago when I was trying to unravel from my ‘fixing and taking responsibility for everyone’ patterns. Highly recommend it. Have it next to my bed always when I find myself back in codependent type patterns.
What I’m listening to:
As someone who wrote a story about her life and shared it on stage I LOVED the conversation that Glennon Doyle had with Maggie Smith on the We Can Do Hard Things podcast. Especially in relation to the importance of women telling their stories and why we so often don’t. They cover lots of ground in this discussion - I loved the part of ‘being good’ and what a trap it is for us. ‘How to Make Betrayal Beautiful’ was the name of the episode.
I also, in my continued love affair with the Wiser than Me podcast, absolutely ADORED the episode with Diane von Furstenberg. I sent it to a few friends actually, so of course I wanted to include it in Lisa Loves. This is an episode I think I’ll come back to a few times. If you haven’t jumped on the bandwagon of that podcast I encourage it!
